The contribution is of the Bulgarian people

Address by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha on the invitation to Bulgaria to join NATO

21.11.2002

Dear fellow-countrymen,

It is my dictum that deeds speak better than words and therefore, I am making this address to each one of you on a special occasion – the invitation that Bulgaria received for NATO membership.

It will be remembered in modern history as one of the milestone events in early 21st century not just for the formal acceptance of our country in the Alliance but also as reconfirmation of the fact that we can achieve our priorities and advance our national interest with concerted efforts.

I congratulate all Bulgarians for the recognition we receive by today’s invitation and express gratitude to all politicians who worked without sparing themselves in the past years to achieve the result.

Let me emphasize the great contribution of the Bulgarian people, your contribution, dear fellow-countrymen, for despite the difficulties of the transition you support the country’s movement forward to the democratic values of the Euro-Atlantic nations.

NATO membership offers great opportunities and it is up to us to use them to good advantage. It gives our country security, economic prospects and prestige with world investors, which is a factor conducive to a higher standard of living.

Dear fellow countrymen,

The satisfaction that we feel today will not becloud our eyes to the new responsibilities that will be facing us. I am convinced that Bulgaria agrees and will responsibly accomplish its mission for the benefit of democratic principles, understanding and peace.
