The new Defense Policy Guidelines (DPG) provide the framework for the future tasks of the German armed forces. They explain why national defence has become less important in comparison to the grown task of crisis management and emphasize the necessity of the North Atlantic Alliance by simultaneously demanding a strengthening of the European military capability to act. But in the conflict between resources, rote and importance of the services, task sharing and rote specification they don't give any information on the military means required for that. To ascertain this and to transform it into concrete plannings is much more difficult than it was in the days of the Cold War. (Europäische Sicherheit / SWP)

Despite difficult missions and a wide range of tasks in training, exercise and peacetime Operations and measures to be taken in the course of the ongoing reorganization as well as the burdens for all the military personnel associated with that, the Army constantly demonstrates its ability and efficiency and receives its earned recognition in the international environment. The multinationality actively experienced in operations as well as the understanding and the tolerance vis-a-vis an unfamiliar cultural environment creates and maintains a convincing confidence in the efficiency of the armed forces and testifies to the determination of all nations involved to contribute to the stabilization in the crisis regions. The transfer of the command of the two important peace missions, i.e. KFOR and ISAF, to two German generals is not only evidence of our outstanding commitment in Afghanistan and Kosovo, but also the international appreciation of our significant contribution as an important force provider. The German Army thus continues to make a visible contribution to securing peace and, in particular, to improving the life situation of many people. (Europäische Sicherheit / SWP)
