Trade Unions and Environmental Sustainable Development

Die International Labour Organisation (ILO) hat im Jahr 1990 das Projekt "Trade Unions and Environmental Sustainable Development" begonnen. Mit diesem Programm soll gefördert werden, dass sich Gewerkschaften stärker dem Thema nachhaltige Entwicklung und Umweltschutz widmen. Teil des Programms sind Workshops sowie Trainingsprogramme. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei folgende Punkte:

• Environmental indicators of development
• Economic development and security
• Equality of opportunity and treatment
• International development
• Political indicators of development
• Social development
• Education and training

World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization

Am 25. März 2002 tagte die "World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation" erstmalig. Sie besteht u.a. aus Präsidenten, Politikern, Akademikern. Geleitet wird die Kommission vom finnischen Präsidenten, Tarja Halonen sowie von Benjamin Mkapa, dem Präsidenten von Tanzania. Deutscher Vertreter in der World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation" ist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker.

Die Aufgabe der Kommission ist es, den Globalisierungsprozess zu nutzen, um Armut und Arbeitslosigkeit zu reduzieren, sowie Wachstum und nachhaltige Entwicklung zu fördern. Hierfür soll die Kommission mögliche Wege entwickeln, die es allen internationalen Organisationen ermöglichen, einen Globalisierungsprozess, der für alle fair und akzeptabel ist, zu forcieren. Dies soll in der Form eines Berichtes im Laufe des Jahres 2003 dem Generaldirektor dargelegt werden.

Neben dieser Formulierung von konkreten Aktionen verfolgt die Kommission folgendes: "Establish the facts and outline the main contours and dynamics of the process; Examine the perceptions of workers, enterprises, investors and consumers as well as different expressions of civil society and public opinion from all parts of the world; Analyse the impact of globalization on employment, decent work, poverty reduction, economic growth and development; Forge a broad consensus on the issues, including the involvement of all interested international organizations, as well as governments and organizations representing workers and employers; and, Launch a process for addressing the key issues posed by the global economy to make globalization sustainable and promote the fair sharing of its benefits".
